Founders Randy and Darlene Ernst had worked in the automotive industry for 23 years when they realized something had to change. At the time, Randy was a line technician working on hard, wet, and oily concrete floors. The years of working on the hard flooring was tough, leaving him with heel spurs, bad knees, fused vertebrae in his lower back, and sciatic nerve problems.

In 1994, Randy and Darlene teamed up with a rubber chemist with over 40 years experience. Two years later they developed the rubber compound for the Ortho Mat®. Fast forward to present day and PTMI offers several different mats for use in many applications:
